[edit] Background

Werewolves, also known as Lycanthropes, come from Greek mythology, but feature in many others. Lycanthropes were created when King Lycaon, a king of Arcadia who served the greek God Zeus a meal made from his own son in order to disprove the God's divinity. As a punishment, he was transformed into a ravenous, vicious wolf.

Every full moon, a person suffering from the Lycanthropy disease will turn into a beast that is half man, half wolf. There are many ways to contract lycanthropy in mythology, such as drinking water from the paw imprint of a wolf, sleeping naked beneath the full moon or being bitten/clawed by a werewolf. In the Harry Potter series, the latter is the only way to become a werewolf.

[edit] History

There are many werewolves in the Harry Potter series, but the two most common recurring werewolves are Fenrir Greyback and Remus Lupin, men with entirely different views on the disease. Remus first appears as the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where he uses Wolfsbane Potion made for him by Severus Snape to regulate the transformation every full moon. Remus avoids endangering other human beings at all costs.

Fenrir Greyback on the other hand, lives to infect as many people as he can, positioning himself close to their homes before the full moon. He is the werewolf who bit Lupin, for a grievance his father had caused. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, he savages Bill Weasley whilst in human form. Although this does not give him lycanthropy, it gives him certain wolfish tendancies, such as enjoying an extremely bloody steak.
