Remus J. Lupin was a former student of Hogwarts, having attended the school along with Harry's parents (James Potter, and Lily Evans), Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew. He was Gryffindor, and a highly intelligent student. In the third book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, he is the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, and is highly considered as the best Defense against the Dark Arts teacher in Harry Potter's time at school, as he tought Harry most of the main spells he knows, to protect him from the outside world.
At a young age, Remus Lupin was attacked, and bitten by Fenrir Greyback, who was the most well known of all werewolves. Lupin was then cursed by this, becoming a Werewolf himself. He believed that he didn't have a chance of getting into Hogwarts, but jumped at the chance when Dumbledore offered it to him. Although worried about other students safety during his transformations, Dumbledore assured him that it was alright. Lupin was the reason the Whomping Willow was planted on the school grounds, so that it concealed a tunnel leading to the Shreiking Shack, so that he may transform without endangering anyone. He became friends with James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew, (Known as the Marauders), which when they made the Marauder's Map they named it after their gang, and eventually they found out about his curse. They became unregistered Animagi, so that Lupin didn't have to spend the full moon alone, and they spent those nights running in the Forbidden Forest.
During the battle at Hogwarts, Remus and his wife, Tonks, are killed when they try fighting for Harry's cause. Remus appears after hearing the call to arms and hopes to protect Harry and the cause he fights for. Despite initially being heisitant to fight in the battle, his wife, Tonks, can't bear to see her husband fight alone. Despite her desire to stay and protect her son, Tonks rushes to Hogwarts where she discovers her husband was last seen fighting Antonin Dolohov, a death eater. Tonks discovers her husband killed by Antonin and is later killed by her aunt, Bellatrix Lestrange.
Lupin and Tonk's bodies were laid out in the main hallway, much to Harry's later dismay upon discovering their death. Lupin's death pushes Harry to finally admit defeat and head to the Death Eater's camp where he believes he will die. Before arriving, he uses the Resurrection Stone to call back his parents, Sirius and Lupin. Lupin laments the fact that he will never meet his son but asks Harry to watch over him. Lupin expresses relief that his son will know how and why he died: fighting to make the world a better place for his son to later live in.
