 Synopsis
The first year students quickly settle into life at Hogwarts and Harry begins to acclimatise to his new classes. His unfamiliarity to the fame that he holds in the wizarding world means that he is slightly unnerved by the curious glances that he receives in the school corridors. The lessons themselves are varied, stretching from the monotonous History of Magic to the intriguing. All the students were looking forward to Defence Against the Dark Arts, but Professor Quirrell turns out to be a nervous wreck. However, Transfiguration, under the strict eye of Professor McGonagall, Charms with Professor Flitwick and Herbology with Professor Sprout are all rather interesting. One day, soon after the beginning of term, the new Gryffindor students have their first Potions lesson. Harry gets the strong impression that Professor Snape downright loathes him. He deducts several points from Gryffindor in the very first lesson due to so-called misdemeanours from Harry. Neville Longbottom faired no better and somehow managed to melt his cauldron and cover himself with the contents.
All in all, it was a relief for Harry and Ron when the weekend arrived and they were invited to Hagrid's hut in the school grounds for tea. Hagrid's cooking turns out to be abysmal, but Harry enjoys spending time with his two first proper friends. Harry notices a cutting from the wizarding newspaper, the Daily Prophet. It describes an attempted break in at Gringotts on the very day that he and Hagrid were there. He raises this point to Hagrid but is answered most unsatisfactory. Harry begins to suspect that Hagrid knows more than he is letting on.
