Chapter 14

[edit] Timeframe [14]

Late March, 1992

[edit] Synopsis [14]

With examinations nearing, the students begin to revise and the teachers pile on extra homework. Harry, Ron and Hermione can only relax on the occasions that Hagrid offers them tea in his hut. On one such occasion, the trio notice a dragon egg sitting in the fireplace. Dragon eggs are classified as illegally tradable objects, and Hagrid has to explain to them that it was given to him by a cloaked stranger during a heavy drinking session in a Hogsmeade pub.
One evening, Hagrid summons the trio to his hut urgently. The dragon is hatching!
Over the following days, the trio help Hagrid to look after the baby dragon. It is fast becoming a little monster but Hagrid does not notice its faults and treats it like a baby, even going as far as to name it Norbert.
With the likelihood of somebody finding out about the dragon increasing, Hagrid is eventually persuaded to part from his pet. Harry hatches a plan. Rons brother Charlie, a dragon keeper in Romania, is contacted and offers to take care of the beast. The real difficulty is how to smuggle it out of the school. Charlie suggests sending it over with some friends that are coming to visit him. They will be travelling by broom and will stop by Hogwarts to pickup the dragon from the top of the astronomy tower.
On the night in question, Harry and Hermione safely transport Norbert up the tower and leave him in the possession of Charlies friends. However, as they attempt to return to the Gryffindor common room, they are caught by Filch and receive detention and a deduction of house points.
