 Synopsis 
After the Christmas holidays, schoolwork starts again at a high pace. Neville Longbottom finds the going particularly tough and gets upset. Harry comforts him by offering him chocolate. He is amazed to find that Nicholas Flanel is mentioned on the collectable card that came with the chocolate. The illusive Flanel is revealed to be an alchemy partner of Dumbledore, and the only known maker of the Philosophers Stone, a legendary substance that produces the elixir of life.
The elation at finding out Flanel�s identity is short lived. It is also nearing the date of the second Gryffindor quidditch fixture and Harry is dismayed to learn that Snape has decided to referee the match. This leads him to consider not playing because of his concerns. However, when the big day arrives it is apparent that Harry�s worries are groundless. He succeeds in catching the snitch within five minutes and Hufflepuff house find themselves defeated.
After the match, Harry witnesses Professors Quirrell and Snape having a secret meeting. Eavesdropping, he discovers that they are discussing the Philosophers Stone. Snape is threatening Quirrell.
Harry discusses his findings with Ron and Hermione. They come to the conclusion that Snape is trying to steal the stone but that it is protected by more that the three headed dog. Hermione suspects that the teachers have placed protective enchantments around it and that Snape was pressuring Quirrell for information on how to get past these obstacles.
