 Synopsis
Harry, Ron and Hermione comb the Hogwarts library for information on the mysterious Nicholas Flamel but their search proves fruitless. All hope appears to be lost when the autumn term ends and Hermione returns home for Christmas, with the two boys choosing to stay at school.
On the morning of Christmas, Harry is surprised to find a pile of presents intended for him. Most are friendly tokens from acquaintances, such as a wooden flute from Hagrid, but the key gift turns out to be an invisibility cloak. An unsigned note is included in the package, stating that the cloak is a Potter family heirloom that is being returned to its rightful owner.
The festivities of Christmas day are very fun for the few students left at Hogwarts, but also very tiring. That night, Ron falls asleep quickly, but Harry decides that he might as well take the opportunity of a deserted school to search the library for more information on Flamel, under the cover of his new cloak.
Unfortunately for Harry, one of the first books that he chooses to examine happens to have the ability to scream! Caretaker Filch hears the noise and alerts Professor Snape to the fact that somebody is being sneaky. Harry is forced to run away before being caught and soon finds himself lost again. He eventually stumbles into a disused classroom. Its only furniture is an ornate mirror, the Mirror of Erised. Unbeknown to Harry, it shows the viewer the deepest desires of their heart. Harry sees himself surrounded by his family whenever he looks into the glass. This is the first time that Harry has ever seen his family and therefore, over the following nights, he feels compelled to return to look into the mirror. However, Professor Dumbledore knows full well what is happening and intervenes, bringing Harry back to his senses. The headmaster explains the function of the mirror and tells Harry that it will soon be moved to a new home.
