Thestrals are fictional creatures from the Harry Potter Universe.
Thestrals are creatures that are only visible to those who have witnessed death, and come to terms with it. Because of their relation to death, they are seen as bad omens to most people, and are classed as dangerous by the Ministry of Magic. They are attracted to the scent of blood. Thestrals can be domesticated and used as a means of transport, quickly carrying their owner to anywhere they wish to go.
AppearanceThestrals are large, winged horses, whose translucent skin stretches closely over their bones, giving them a skeletal appearance. Their faces can be described as dragon-like, and they have white eyes, without any pupils. Their large, leathery wings sprout from their back, with a bat-like appearance. They have long black manes and large tails with black hair, and sharp fangs used to attack and eat their prey.
HistoryThe first major appearance of Thestrals was in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, though they have been present since the Prisoner of Azkaban. In Harry's fifth year, he notices that the carriages which take students to the school from Hogsmeade are being pulled by Thestrals, while in his previous years they seemed to be pulled by magic. Harry asked Ron if he could see them, and he said no, but Luna Lovegood said that she could. In a Care of Magical Creatures class taught later that year, Hagrid shows the class Thestrals and explains that they can only be seen by those who have seen people die. The only students in the class who can see the Thestrals are Harry, who had seen Cedric Diggory die the year before (though he could not see them at the end of his fourth year because he had not yet come to terms with the death), Neville Longbottom, who had seen his grandfather die, and Theodore Nott. Later that year, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Ginny and Luna ride Thestrals to the Ministry of Magic to save Sirius Black from Lord Voldemort, and arrive there incredibly fast.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, when members of the Order of the Phoenix escorted Harry from Number 4, Privet Drive to the Burrow, Hermione and Kingsley Shacklebolt rode a Thestral, as did Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour. Later, during the Battle of Hogwarts, the Thestrals living in the Forbidden Forest attacked some of the giants working with Voldemort from the air.
