Shrieking Shack

The Shrieking Shack, as portrayed in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

The Shrieking Shack is an abandoned house located in Hogsmeade Village. Among the villagers, as well as students of Hogwarts, the shack has been rumored to be haunted for years, with people's claims that they have heard screams from within the building. On the contrary, the screams were those of Remus Lupin, as the Shrieking Shack would act as his place of refuge whenever in his werewolf state.

[edit] History

The shack was first instituted for its use by Albus Dumbledore during Remus Lupin's student years at Hogwarts. Its sole purpose was to act as a safe area for Remus to be while he was in the form of a werewolf. Connecting the school grounds to the shack in Hogsmeade Village is a tunnel at the roots of the Whomping Willow, which was also implemented to conceal the secret entrance. Poking a knot in the trunk of the tree paralyzes its movements, giving way to easy access for Lupin, as well as his close friends Sirius Black and James Potter and then friend Peter Pettigrew.
