Nagini as played by a python.
|Died||May 2, 1998|
While Nagini is played by a python in the movies, it is mentioned in the books that she is a venomous snake. Pythons strangle their victims instead of killing them with poison, so it might be possible that Nagini is of a fictional, magical snake species. She is also mentioned having a hood like a cobra.
It is unknown when, where or how Voldemort got Nagini. He might have found her in the wild or bought her; however, she is very loyal to her master and is quite intelligent for a snake, possibly due to Lord Voldemort using her as a horcrux.
Nagini is first seen in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Shortly after being turned into Voldemort's seventh horcrux (using the death of Bertha Jorkins), she is together with Voldemort and Peter Pettigrew (as well as Barty Crouch Jr. in the film) when they are interrupted by an old gardener named Frank Bryce. Voldemort kills him, and most presumably lets Nagini eat the corpse.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry has a vision in which Arthur Weasley is attacked by Nagini, in an attempt to infiltrate the Department of Mysteries. At this point, Voldemort is controlling Nagini's actions. Arthur Weasley was saved by Ministry workers shortly after Harry had the vision.
Appearing again in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, she is present as Charity Burbage, a teacher at Hogwarts, is killed in Malfoy Manor. She eats the body of the dead Muggle Studies teacher. She is later sent to Godric's Hollow, where, using unknown, but extremely dark magic, Voldemort makes Nagini take control of Bathilda Bagshot, being hidden inside her corpse. Nagini takes Harry and Hermione into Bagshot's home, where she suddenly breaks out of Bagshot's body, intending to kill the two visitors. Harry and Hermione manage to escape, but fail to kill Nagini. Hermione's attempt to save Harry from Nagini's muscular coils resulted in the breaking of Harry's wand.Battle of Hogwarts, she was being protected by Voldemort in a magical orb as she was one of his last remaining Horcruxes. She killed Severus Snape in the Shrieking Shack, under orders from Voldemort, but didn't eat the body as they had to leave the scene to take part in the Battle of Hogwarts. Once in the Forbidden Forest, Voldemort releases her from the orb, assuming she is no longer in danger. However, returning to the castle, carrying Nagini, he underestimates Neville Longbottom, who retrieves Godric Gryffindor's sword from the Sorting Hat. Neville swings it up in the air and cuts Nagini's head off, which was the last horcrux remaining of Voldemort. This leaves Voldemort unprotected by any Horcruxes, as Nagini was his last remaining bond, as by "killing" Harry in the forest he destroyed one himself, and Voldemort collapses at the end of his duel with Harry, finally defeated.
