Species
While Nagini is played by a python in the movies, it is mentioned in the books that she is a venomous snake. Pythons strangle their victims instead of killing them with poison, so it might be possible that Nagini is of a fictional, magical snake species. She is also mentioned having a hood like a cobra.
Background
It is unkown when, where or how Voldemort got Nagini. He might have found her in the wild or bought her; however, she is very loyal to her master and is quite intelligent for a snake.
History
Nagini is first seen in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. She is together with Voldemort, Peter Pettigrew and Barty Crouch Jr. (Barty Crouch jr. appearing in Harry's dream is only in the movie_ in the book only Voldermort and Peter Pettigrew are the only two in Harry's dream) when they are interrupted by an old gardener named Frank Bryce. Voldemort kills him, and most presumably lets Nagini eat the corpse.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry has a vision where Arthur Weasley is under attack by Nagini. At this point, Voldemort is controlling Nagini's actions. Arthur Weasley was saved by Ministry workers shortly after Harry had the vision.
Appearing again in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, she is present as Charity Burbage, a teacher at Hogwarts, is killed in the Malfoy Manor. She eats the body of the dead Muggle Studies teacher, and is later the same year sent to Godric's Hollow. Using unknown, but extremely dark magic, Voldemort makes Nagini take control of Bathilda Bagshot, being hidden inside her corpse. Nagini takes Harry and Hermione into Bagshot's home, where she suddenly breaks out of Bagshot's body, intending to kill the two visitors. Harry and Hermione manage to escape, but failed to kill Nagini.
During the Battle of Hogwarts, she was being held guarded by Voldemort in a protection orb as she was a Horcrux. She killed Severus Snape under orders from Voldemort, but didn't eat the body as they had to hurry away from the scene. Once in the Forbidden Forest, Voldemort releases her from the orb, assuming she is no longer in danger. However, returning to the castle, carrying Nagini, he underestimates Neville Longbottom, who retrieves Godric Gryffindor's sword from the Sorting Hat. Neville swings it up in the air and cuts Nagini's head off. This leaves Voldemort unprotected by any Horcruxes, as Nagini was his last remaining one, and Harry can proceed to kill Voldemort.
