|Also known as||Myrtle|
Moaning Murtle is a fictional character from the Harry Potter Universe. Shirley Henderson, who played Myrtle in the film adaptations of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, was 37 when she first played Myrtle, making her the oldest actor to play a student at Hogwarts.
Myrtle was one of the students of Hogwarts. When the Chamber of Secrets was opened for the first time in 1943, Myrtle was the first person to be killed by the Basilisk that had been in the chamber and told to kill Muggle-Born children. When Myrtle was killed by the Basilisk, the Ministry threatened to close Hogwarts. Tom Riddle, the boy who had opened the Chamber to release the creature and would later go on to become Lord Voldemort heard of this and, not wanting the school to be closed because of it, framed Rubeus Hagrid.
Myrtle continues to haunt the stall where she was killed in the girls toilets on the first floor. She often spends her time crying in the U-bend.
