[edit] Background

Luna talking during a meal, talking about something nobody else really cares about.

Luna lives with her father Xenophilius Lovegood. He is the editor of the unpopular magazine The Quibbler, which in opposition to the Daily Prophet tells things as they are instead of covering them up. When Luna was nine, her mother, who worked on inventing spells, was killed in an experiment. She is often teased by her classmates and other students for her strange behaviour, clothing style, and remarks about things no one else seems to care about, and for being quite random in general.

[edit] History

[edit] The Order of the Phoenix

Luna introducing Harry Potter to Thestrals.

Luna, as first seen in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on the Hogwarts Express, is the same age as Ginny. She introduces Harry to thestrals, animals that only people who have witnessed death can see (only in the movie; in the book, Hagrid did it). When Dumbledore's Army is founded, she joins, and proves that she is a quite capable witch. She learns how to summon a Patronus very quickly. Her father's magazine also came in handy when Hermione persuaded Rita Skeeter to interview Harry about Voldemort's return. The interview was released in The Quibbler.

Later the same year, Luna joined Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville and Ginny as they went to rescue Sirius in the Ministry of Magic. When they arrived, they learned he was not there, and that they had been tricked. Luna fought against a couple of Death Eaters, and defended both Ginny and Ron at the same time. She was eventually defeated by a Stunning spell from a Death Eater.

The Daily Prophet paid The Quibbler quite a large sum for reprinting the Rita Skeeter's interview with Harry. With the money, they traveled to Sweden to hunt for Crumple-Horned Snorkacks.

[edit] The Half-Blood Prince

Luna meets Harry and Neville again on the train to Hogwarts the next year. She tells Harry that The Quibbler is now a well-selling magazine because of Harry's interview, but when Harry mentions there will be no meetings with Dumbledore's Army anymore, she becomes sad, stating that it was "almost like having friends". Romilda Vane, a girl who likes Harry, wants him to come over to her gang's compartment, but he says that he is staying with his friends in his own. Luna tries to explain to Harry that everyone expects him to have cooler friends than Neville and herself. Harry tells them that they are among the coolest people he knows that Romilda and her gang didn't fight against Death Eaters at the Minstry unlike Neville and her.

When Christmas arrived, the Slug Club was having a party. Harry was a little desperate having no one to go with, so he finally asked Luna. She was very surprised and explained that she would be very happy to go. When she meets up with Harry to go to the party, she is dressed in a quite eye-catching dress, and Harry thinks she looks quite attractive. She was very interested in socializing with the other guests, and also made Harry enjoy the night.

Luna wearing her Lion Head Hat, which she wore at Quidditch games. It could roar so loud that it could be heard across the whole stadium.

Later that year, she would take over the commentator spot during a game which Zacharias Smith, the usual commentator, couldn't attend himself. She didn't care much about the game, forgetting the players' names, and mostly talking about the weather or talking about funny things she spotted.

Near the end of the year, she defended the castle during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. She wasn't injured as she had drunk Felix Felicis, which Harry had given to his friends. She was originally posted to guard Severus Snape's office with Hermione, but Snape distracted them by telling them to watch after Filius Flitwick, who he claimed had collapsed in his office. It turned out that he had cast a spell on him in order to escape his own office, so he could go to the Astronomy Tower and kill Dumbledore.

[edit] The Deathly Hallows

Luna attended Bill and Fleur's wedding that summer. Even though Harry was disguised as a Weasley, she could tell it was Harry by looking at his expression. She was rather civilized during the wedding, dressed in all yellow, although she suddenly started dancing.

Returning to school, Luna was quite sad that Harry, Ron and Hermione would not attend Hogwarts. However, she kept loyal to Dumbledore's Army, attempting to steal Godric Gryffindor's sword from Severus Snape's office. They were busted, and were sent to the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid as a detention. In rebellion, she, Ginny, and Neville revived Dumbledore's Army and tried to trouble Snape and the Carrows as much as they could.

When Luna was traveling back home for Christmas, she is captured by Death Eaters as her father's newspaper was posting articles in favour of Harry. She was being kept in the Malfoy Manor's cellar as a prisoner together with the famous wand maker Ollivander, who she befriended. In a desperate attempt to save his daughter, Xenophilius Lovegood betrayed her friends (the trio) to the Death Eaters by telling them that they were at his house. Harry, Ron, and Hermione managed to escape, but the Death Eaters managed to spot them as they disappeared, so they knew that it was not a false alarm.

However, Luna is saved by Dobby together with the other prisoners. Unfortunately, Dobby died in the process, and they all pay him their last respects. She then returned to Hogwarts to resume rebelling with Dumbledore's Army.

[edit] Battle of Hogwarts

As Harry, Ron and Hermione arrived at Hogwarts, Harry asked the Ravenclaws of Dumbledore's Army if they of any relics of Ravenclaw. Luna answers that there is a diadem which has been lost for centuries. She took Harry to the common room of Ravenclaw (this makes Hufflepuff's the only common room Harry hasn't visited) to show him a model of the diadem. Alecto Carrow found them, but Luna Stunned her. She then joined the battle in the castle. She even produced a Patronus which drove off quite a few Dementors.

Alongside Hermione and Ginny, she fought off Bellatrix Lestrange long enough for Molly Weasley to step in and kill her. She was very early to congratulate Harry, and diverted the others so Harry, Ron, and Hermione could get some peace.

[edit] After the Battle of Hogwarts

After the battle, she came to find out about the sad truth that some creatures are non-existent. She started working with real creatures instead as a magizoologist. She later married fellow magizoologist Rolf Scamander, who is the grandson of another famous magizoologist and Newton Scamander. Luna gave birth to the twin boys Lorcan and Lysander, who were a bit younger than the children of Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione.

[edit] Trivia

  • Rumours said that either Remus Lupin or Severus Snape was Luna's father, but this was proved false as Xenophilius made his appearance.
  • Evanna Lynch, who portrays Luna in the movies, was a big Harry Potter fan even before she got the role.
  • Out of Harry's closest friends (Neville, Ginny, Ron, Hermione and Luna), Luna was the only one who didn't appear in the first film or book.
