[edit] Background

Kreacher is an old house-elf who is known for being very grumpy. However, when Kreacher likes someone, he is just like a normal house-elf who makes food, cleans up and other things.

[edit] History

[edit] Pre-Harry Potter

Kreacher was the Black family's own house-elf and had been so for ages when he was handed down to Regulus Black. Regulus, a Death Eater, saw the opportunity to advance in the ranks when Lord Voldemort announced he needed a house-elf. He told Kreacher to go with Voldemort and to exactly as he said. When Kreacher went with Voldemort, Voldemort took him to the Horcrux Cave and forced Kreacher to drink the poison in the basin. When Kreacher was done, Voldemort put Salazar Slytherin's locket in the basin and left. Kreacher was left behind to be killed by the Inferi in the lake, but Kreacher, being a house-elf, was able to Disapparate.

When Kreacher told Regulus what Voldemort had forced him to do, Regulus told Kreacher to take him back to the Horcrux Cave. Regulus brought with him a fake version of the locket in the basin, and when they arrived, Regulus drank the dangerous potion which guarded the original. He ordered Kreacher to switch the lockets, and to go home and destroy the real one. Regulus was going to die in the cave, and he ordered Kreacher not to tell the rest of the family what had happened. When Kreacher came home, he proceeded to try and destroy the locket, but was unable to do so. He tried and tried, but the locket seemed unbreakable.

[edit] Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

When Regulus, and later his mother, died, Sirius Black became Kreacher's new master even though they hated each other. When the Order of the Phoenix made Grimmauld Place Twelve their headquarters, Albus Dumbledore told Sirius that he had to treat Kreacher nicely if they wanted to keep him on their side. This was of severe importance since Kreacher heard everything the Order discussed and could tell the Death Eaters if Sirius didn't treat him well. However, Sirius ignored this and continued to treat Kreacher bad. When Arthur Weasley was attacked by Nagini, and the Order was to discuss this, Sirius told him to get out. Kreacher took this literally and went to the Malfoys. Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy (both originally from the Black family) treated him well and he told them many of the Order's secrets. Through their special physcological connection, Voldemort gave Harry Potter a vision of Sirius Black being tortured in the Ministry of Magic. Harry asked Kreacher through the Floo-network if Sirius was with him, but Kreacher lied. Harry went to the Ministry to rescue Sirius, only for him and his friends to get attacked by the Death Eaters. With members of the Order arriving to help them, Bellatrix Lestrange managed to kill Sirius Black.

[edit] Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

After Sirius' death, Harry Potter became Kreacher's new master. Kreacher disliked Potter and neither did Potter like Kreacher. When Albus Dumbledore came to Privet Drive to tell Harry what Sirius had left him, which included Kreacher and Grimmauld Place Twelve and all his belongings. Kreacher was summoned, to see if Harry really was his master. After telling Kreacher to shut up, Harry realised that Kreacher was in his command. Not wanting Kreacher, Harry ordered him to work with the other house-elves at the Hogwarts kitchens. Harry's close house-elf friend Dobby, who also worked at the kitchens, was ordered to team up with Kreacher so they could tail Draco Malfoy for Harry. When reporting about Malfoy's status, Kreacher put Draco in high respect, saying he was behaving extremely well. Harry asked Dobby, but Dobby couldn't deny Kreacher's statement.

When Christmas came, Harry was surprised to see that Kreacher had sent him a present. Not knowing if this was normal behaviour for a house-elf, he opened the present, only to find out it was a box of maggots.

[edit] Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

After escaping the failed wedding of Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley, Harry, Ron and Hermione went into hiding at Grimmauld Place Twelve. Harry made Kreacher tell him the story of Regulus, after they found out Regulus was R.A.B., who had left a note inside the fake locket Harry and Albus Dumbledore found earlier. Fairly confused, Harry doesn't understand how Kreacher could betray Sirius to Voldemort after how Voldemort had treated him, and how Regulus died to bring Voldemort down. Hermione then told Harry how house-elves don't care about sides in a war, but just stick to whoever's kind to them. Harry understands that he has to treat Kreacher kindly, and Kreacher tells them that he was unable to destroy the locket, and that Mundungus Fletcher stole the locket. After finding Fletcher, Kreacher was awarded with the fake locket. Being given this item rapidly changed Kreacher's opinion of Harry, and he started to both like his new master and serve him properly. He even started to like Hermione, who was a Muggle-born.

When the Battle of Hogwarts started, Kreacher led the house-elf division of Hogwarts's forces to battle, in memory of Regulus. It is presumable that Kreacher survived the battle and continued to serve Harry.
