Inferi

Inferi

"They are corpses, dead bodies that have been bewitched to do a Dark wizard's bidding. Inferi have not been seen for a long time, however, not since Voldemort was last powerful.... He killed enough people to make an army of them, of course."
Albus Dumbledore to Harry Potter on Inferi

Inferi (singular form is Inferius) are corpses, dead bodies that have been bewitched to do a Dark wizard's bidding, according to Albus Dumbledore. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, he also said that Inferi have not been seen for a long time, not since Voldemort was last powerful. Voldemort used Inferi in both the first and second wizarding wars.

[edit] The Half-Blood Prince

On a leaflet Harry Potter received from the Ministry of Magic on protection against Dark forces, there is a snippet about Inferi as follows:

"Unconfirmed sightings suggest that the Death Eaters may now be using Inferi. Any sighting of an Inferius, or encounter with same, should be reported to the Ministry IMMEDIATELY."

In The Half-Blood Prince, when Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter go to the Horcrux Cave, many Inferi appear from the water and attack them while Harry attempts to feed Dumbledore water. Harry tries to fight them off by firing numerous different spells at them. The most effective spells that work on Inferi are spells involving fire because they despise heat and light alike, being Dark creatures. Spells intended to cause pain do not affect Inferi.
