This spell was used by Tom Riddle in the film version of the Chamber of Secrets against Hagrid's pet acromantula, Aragog, in a memory being viewed by Harry. Harry then used this spell to defend himself against Aragog's children when they attacked him and Ron.
This spell was also used in Universal Orlando's "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey" attraction. When the guests enter the Forbidden Forest, they will encounter acromantulas and Aragog. This is where Hermione uses this spell to blast the spiders away from the riders.
The spell's origins are suspected to be araneus, meaning “spider” in Latin, and exuo, meaning “I lay aside”.
